Beverley Knight invites LCGC to sing on her Radio 2 Show!

Beverley Knight is hosting a new series of ' Beverley 's Gospel Nights' on Radio Two this month. LCGC were invited to the BBC Maida Vale Studio's last Saturday (30th June), to record some songs for the show. The series features the very best in gospel music and will give enlightening insights into some of the world's greatest musicians and singers whose lives have been informed by gospel music.

LCGC recorded the song 'Praise Worthy' - a new song on LCGC's set list written by Tunde Oyerinde (the brother of LCGC's Musical Director, Ayo Oyerinde). The song is a worshipful gospel melody that describes the magnificence of God.

The Choir were then involved in a joint collaboration between Beverley Knight, Candi Staton, LCGC, Noel Robinson & NU Image. The featured song was 'I Can Go to God in Prayer'. LCGC Choir Member Gemma Miller said 'When we all sang the song together the music was fantastic! Beverley Knight and Candi Staton sang astoundingly – it's their voices that we really admire and marvel”.

Rev Bazil Meade, LCGC Principal said “ Beverley is a great friend to myself and LCGC. We always love to sing with her – she has an amazing talent and we feel privileged to be working with her on this show.”

Beverley Knight's Biography

Appropriately for the host of a gospel show, Beverley Knight grew up singing in church, but by the time she was in her late teens had progressed to performing in clubs in and around her hometown. Aided by her producer cousin Don E she signed to the independent Dome Records in 1994.

The following year's debut single, "Flavour Of The Old School", was a hot slice of UK swingbeat co-written with production team 2B3. The song became a big club hit and also scraped into the national Top 50 in April. Follow-up singles "Down For The One" and "Moving On Up (On The Right Side)" were lesser hits, but a re-released "Flava" peaked at number 33 in March 1996, buoyed by the critical acclaim heaped on her debut album The B-Funk.

Disagreements with her label over musical direction briefly interrupted Knight's career, before she landed a major label deal with Parlophone Records in February 1997. She enlisted producers 2B3, Don E and Carl McIntosh (ex-Loose Ends) for the recording of Prodigal Sista, which on release was hailed as one of the greatest UK soul albums of the 90s. The album featured several UK Top 40 hits, including "Made It Back", "Rewind (Find A Way)" and the peerless "Greatest Day", which climbed to number 14 in July 1999.

Beverley's achievements are many and as a triple Mobo winner, double Brit Award and Mercury Award nominee, she has outlasted many of her contemporaries from the mid 90's and she has had three critically acclaimed gold selling albums since signing to Parlophone in the mid 90's.

Acknowledged by critics and peers as one of the best vocalists the UK has produced, it is her stunning soul/gospel voice and live performances for which she is perhaps best known. She has been invited to sing for various celebrated figures including Mohammed Ali, Nelson Mandela and even the leaders of the G8. She has also sung on stage with artists from Chaka Kahn to Bryan Adams and on record with Jay Kay, Jools Holland and Courtney Pine, to name a few as well as with the host of megastars on last year's number one Band Aid 20 single.
