Last night on Monday 10th May LCGC performed at The Sony Radio Academy Awards Hosted by Chris Evans where Trevor Nelson won the Main Gold Award. Trevor Nelson is the co-presenter of 1Xtra's breakfast show as well as programmes on Radio 1 and 2. As he was presented with the night’s biggest honour the Gold award LCGC serenaded him by singing 'Now That We've Found Love'. Recognising an outstanding contribution to radio Jarvis Cocker, who hosts a Sunday afternoon programme on 6, received the public-voted Rising Star award at the Grosvenor House Hotel-held event and his station colleagues Adam and Joe the best comedy award, while the Asian Network’s Nihal won the best speech programme.
Cocker used his acceptance speech to spell out the unique proposition of 6 whose future, along with that of the Asian Network, is currently the subject of a BBC Trust consultation after being recommended for closure. “6 Music is never going to be the highest-rated radio station in the Absolute Radio lost out to BBC Radio 5 Live for UK station of the year, but did win best live event coverage for its Absolute Blur production with TBI Media, while its breakfast show presenter Christian O’Connell’s Who’s Calling Christian? feature won best competition. Bauer-owned Kiss 100, which won regional station of the year at last month’s Music Week Awards, was station of the year with a 1m-plus audience. Other commercial radio winners included Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon’s The Capital Breakfast Show for best entertainment programme, Planet Rock for digital station of the year and Real Radio Yorkshire’s Dixie & Gayle for breakfast show of the year (under 10m). Radio 1’s Zane Lowe added to his previous Sony wins with another two honours. He won best specialist music programme and was named music broadcaster of the year, while his station colleague Scott Mills was music radio personality of the year. Radio 2 presenter Dermot O’Leary’s Saturday afternoon show was named best music programme, NME Radio for Skins Radio picked up best use of branded content and the best music special award went to Elvis By Bono made by White Pebble Media and Ten Alps Radio for Radio 4.
